A continuation of works combining cement and paint on insulation panels. The panels have been manipulated to form the basic design. These works draw their inspiration from the accidental patterns on material one might find at construction sites. Although the works resemble the popular Abstract Expressionist icons, the material sets these works apart and they are unexpected in their execution.
A series of works where cement has been added to paint. Unwieldy in application but providing a great texture, these works were a centerpiece for a 2018 show at Cabana Home in Santa Barbara.
More experimentation with cement. Here the cement has become the painting medium. Because of the difficulty in application on various materials, the results are hard to control. Free of traditional presentation and imagery these uncalculated works mimicked accidental results.
These works were originally medium sized cement pieces with avian imagery. Earlier I had made small pieces which worked well especially with Hummingbirds (see the Salsipuedes - robyngeddesart.net). For some reason the larger format did not work as well and I painted over the pictures. I put the works aside for later. It was then I realized that these minimal pieces were unexpected and strange in that the frame, cement and center where all part of one geometric composition.
Unorthodox materials and surface texture have played a large part in my work. Influenced by Judy Pfaff’s installations of industrial plastics at Holly Solomon in the late 70’s, I started experimenting with various materials. At Canal Surplus was a deal on bulk sand-paper which was hard to pass up. In the late 90’s, the sandpaper works were various bird paintings. But seeing the strength of the sandpaper alone, I let the grid stand as the design. Cabana Home in Santa Barbara has been great in realizing the decorative lending these pieces can bring.
